A Vanishing Heritage
Endangered languages represent a critical aspect of human cultural diversity that faces unprecedented threats in the modern era. Of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken worldwide today, linguists estimate that nearly half will disappear by the end of this century. These endangered languages often survive only among small communities of elderly speakers, with transmission to younger generations interrupted by dominant languages used in education, media, and commerce. Each language embodies unique ways of conceptualizing the world, containing specialized knowledge about local ecosystems, medicinal plants, and cultural practices that have developed over centuries. When a language disappears, we lose not only a communication system but also distinctive cultural perspectives and irreplaceable knowledge about human cognition and history. Shutdown123
